LHCBA condemns Taseer, Bhatti’s assassination
* Justice Nasira condemns interior minister for saying that he himself will shoot whoever commits blasphemy

LAHORE: The speakers at the general house meeting of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) condemned the assassination of former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer and Federal Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti.
Justice (r) Nasira Javed Iqbal, while condemning the murder of Salmaan Taseer, said that it was the beginning of a new wave of hatred. She also condemned garlanding of Taseer’s confessed killer, Mumtaz Qadri, by lawyers.
She asked the LHCBA to write a circular to the Rawalpindi bar, seeking its condemnation of that act. She said if Taseer did something against the law, he should be prosecuted but taking law into one’s own hands could not be allowed. Nasira also condemned Interior Minister Rehman Malik for saying that he himself will shoot whoever commits blasphemy. She said the killing of Shahbaz Bhatti was a murder of supremacy of the law. She demanded the lawyers to start a movement against such hatred. She said Pakistan was made for the minorities as Muslims were a minority in the subcontinent.
Senior Advocate Abdul Rasheed Qureshi said that Taseer was a true Muslim. He said that he had been detained in jail with Taseer twice and never ever did he listen any comment against Islam from him.
He said his father MD Taseer was prominent among the participants of Ghazi Ilamuddin’s funeral.
The LHCBA general house, by unanimously adopting a resolution, condemned the murder of Bhatti and demanded of the federal government to expose the hands behind this murder and award exemplary punishment to the murderers. The bar also declared Rehman Malik a security risk and asked the federal government for his immediate removal. The LHCBA unanimously adopted the resolution in its general house meeting presided over by its President, Muhammad Asghar Gill. Bar member Robinson tabled the resolution.
The resolution says the brutal murder of Shahbaz Bhatti triggered serious concern for the whole nation as an innocent person was gunned down only because he was representative of minorities and raised voice for their rights. It also criticised the government for its failure to control the law and order situation in which a patriot like Shahbaz Bhatti was murdered in broad daylight. The house held Rehman Malik responsible for the murder of Bhatti and said it was in the national interest that the minister should step down from his office
