India News:journalist shot dead in Mumbai

Investigative journalist shot dead in Mumbai

Senior investigative journalist Jyotirmoy Dey was shot dead by motorcycle-borne killers in broad daylight in Mumbai's central suburb of Powai on Saturday afternoon.

Police said two men on a bike drew up close to Dey's own bike before the man riding pillion pumped five bullets into him from behind. The attack was carried out at 2.40 pm opposite the D-Mart convenience store in Powai's plush Hiranandani Gardens, as the 56-year-old journalist rode his bike in the direction of his home.

Dey, who wrote under the byline 'J Dey', was Editor (Special Investigations) with the Mumbai tabloid Mid-Day. He worked for several years with The Indian Express up to 2005, the year he joined Hindustan Times. Dey wrote extensively on the Mumbai underworld, and broke some of the most significant crime stories during his stint with The Express.

In recent weeks, Dey had written extensively on the oil smuggling and pilferage mafia functioning off the coast of Mumbai. He was also investigating the recent Pakmodia Street shooting in which the driver-cum-bodyguard of Dawood Ibrahim's brother Iqbal Kaskar was killed.

Mumbai Police said Dey's body bore eight bullet wounds, four entry and four exit wounds.

Footage from the closed circuit TV cameras of the D-Mart store was checked immediately, but no leads were immediately available on his killers. The attack took place at an angle from the store, on a somewhat steep incline.

Additional Commissioner of Police Vishwas Nagre Patil said bystanders rushed Dey to the Hiranandani Hospital nearby, where he was declared dead. Two eyewitnesses, one of whom tried in vain to chase after the fleeing killers, have given detailed statements to investigators.

Police officers said they were investigating possible links between the murder and something that Dey might have written lately. One of his recent reports had led to the arrest of two men allegedly involved in an oil smuggling racket, sources said.

Police sources said the method of the killing indicated a well-planned hit, executed despite the continuing rain through the day.

Dey is survived by his wife, Shubha, also a journalist.

Mid-Day Editor Sachin Kalbag said the killing was a tremendous loss to the newspaper. Kalbag sad Dey was called a "guru" by budding crime reporters who gained from his expertise in investigative reporting.

"We are very much shocked to hear this tragic news," Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal said. He recalled having attended the ceremony to release Dey's book 'Zero Dial', about informers, three months ago, in the presence of actor Ajay Devgn.
