PESHAWAR: Four persons were killed and three others injured when a remote-controlled bomb hit a public transport vehicle in the Matani town in the outskirts of Peshawar, police and locals said on Thursday.
Matani is close to the border of semi-tribal Darra Adamkhel and its people have formed anti-Taliban Lashkars to check the entry of militants into the area. Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) Rural Circle, Sajjad Khan, told The News that the blast took place at some distance from the bazaar in Matani near a pick-up vehicle carrying commuters and their belongings to the semi-tribal Kalakhel area in Frontier Region (FR) Peshawar.
The official said a remote-controlled device was planted in a roadside pile of garbage, which was triggered when the pick-up was passing through the area. Police said four persons traveling in the vehicle were killed and three others injured.
A Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) official said it was a remote-controlled device weighing around four kilograms and packed in a pressure cooker. Steel pellets were also used to cause more casualties, the official added.
Muhammad Shabbir, an eyewitness, told The News that eight persons were traveling in the vehicle. A huge blast occurred when the bomb hit the vehicle just after crossing the Matani bazaar.
This is the second attack on a Kalakhel-bound village vehicle in a week. Earlier on Monday, five persons were killed when a time-device went off in a Kalakhel-bound pickup at a bus stand in Matani area. Sources close to rescue workers identified two of the dead as Noor Rehman and Aslam Khan. Identities of two other slain persons could not be ascertained.
