 Sushma Swaraj dances at Rajghat

“The way in which party leaders breached the sanctity of Rajghat by dancing there is condemnable. The party should tender an apology to the people. ...."

  • BJP leader Sushma Swaraj’s act of dancing at Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial, Rajghat, during her party’s protest against police action at Ramlila Maidan kicked off a political storm on Tuesday as the Congress and the BJP sparred over it.
Taking umbrage at Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh’s remarks terming the BJP a party of dancers, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha justified her act of singing and dancing to patriotic songs and said that those opposing it suffer from slavish mentality.
“Till the last breath we will sing and dance to patriotic songs. Those who are opposing it are suffering from mental slavery. In every nook and corner of the country, we can sing patriotic songs...As regards Digvijaya Singh, he is known for using indecent language,” Swaraj said at a press conference on Tuesday evening.
She said the Congress was trying to divert attention from the main issues of black money and corruption. Swaraj added that the Internet had dance clippings of Congress leaders.
Earlier in the day, Digvijaya Singh accused BJP leaders of violating the sanctity of Rajghat by dancing there and demanded an apology from them. “The way in which party leaders breached the sanctity of Rajghat by dancing there is condemnable. The party should tender an apology to the people.
Yeh nachiyon ki party kab se ho gayi (When did the BJP become a party of dancers)? The BJP belonged to an ideology which killed Gandhi. With its leaders Sushma Swaraj and Vijay Goel dancing there, they have shown that they belong to this ideology,” he said.
Congress general secretary B K Hariprasad demanded that Swaraj should resign as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
